Toys for Tots Program Kicks Off in the Omaha Metro

Christmas may seem a long way off, but it takes time and great care to make sure children-in-need have a happy holiday season.

United Way of the Midlands and other local partners are supporting the USMC Reserve’s efforts.

At the request of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, United Way of the Midlands and the 2-1-1 call center coordinate the involvement of nonprofit agencies as they take Toys for Tots applications from families in Eastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.  United Way manages the database of family applications, to make sure donors' toys reach as many local children as possible.

TOY DONATION SITES

Residents of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area are encouraged to donate new and unwrapped toys for youngsters – items that would be appropriate for infants and children up to age 14.  The USMC Reserve asks that people consider toys that they would buy for their own children or young relatives. Toys for Tots will not distribute gifts that too-closely resemble weapons, or gifts of food.

Toy donations will be accepted through Monday, December 9, 2013 in Toys for Tots boxes at a wide variety of retail stores and businesses, including area Walmart, Hy-Vee, Bakers, Walgreens, Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.  Members of the reserve unit will then pick up toys from drop-off sites and sort them. On December 18 and 19, the USMC Reserve will deliver toys to the local agencies that are taking family applications.

FAMILY APPLICATION SITES

Participating agencies will take applications from families from November 1 through December 6, 2013.  Families that want to apply for toys should dial 2-1-1, any time of day or night, to find the application site closest to them.  The program provides toys for children ages 0-14.
