Free Tax Preparation Resources Available to Public January 15, 2014 Filing income taxes can be overwhelming, and not all in our community can afford to pay for expert advice to ensure they’re filing accurately and taking full advantage of their tax opportunities. But there’s help on the way, in two forms: free tax preparation by highly trained local volunteers, and a free online site that provides self-filers a safe and easy way to do it themselves. Free tax resources are provided in partnership with: ONLINE TAX ASSISTANCE Most Omaha-Council Bluffs area residents who earn $58,000 or less also will have the opportunity to prepare their own taxes using an online program offered through a collaboration of United Way, the Walmart Foundation and Goodwill Industries International. The site, www.MyFreeTaxes.com/uwmomaha, can be accessed from any internet-enabled computer. As well, most of the local VITA preparation sites will have computers set up for those who prefer to file their own taxes but would like the extra support offered there. IN PERSON TAX ASSISTANCE The Omaha Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition will oversee five local preparation centers, administered by Family Housing Advisory Services (FHAS), and funded through United Way of the Midlands, the Walmart Foundation and Goodwill Industries International. Call 2-1-1 for information on site location, qualifications and available resources. Free tax preparation and free federal and state e-file is available at five metro-area sites and open throughout the tax season. The tax site partners encourage filers to take advantage of opportunities to improve their financial stability through savings opportunities and wise use of tax credits. Certain VITA neighborhood filing centers will also offer a full range of additional services and opportunities, including screenings for public benefits and prescription drug savings, and free financial education seminars.
