As chief of staff he worked directly with the CEO on guiding day-to-day operations, leading priority projects within the Department, and aligning division actions and communications in support of DHHS’ mission of Helping People Live Better Lives.
Governor Ricketts appointed Matt to director of the Division of Children and Family Services, effective August 2017. The 105th Nebraska Legislature confirmed Matt during the second session (January 2018).
Under Matt’s leadership, CFS focused on three primary objectives: early engagement with families to utilize prevention and intervention services to stabilize and strengthen the family so parents can safely raise their our children; to provide the CFS team with the necessary resources and supports to engage families; and to identify and correct barriers for children that have experienced a prolonged time in care. The result of this work led to year over year decreases in the number of children in out of home placements and a reduction in the total number of children entering the child welfare system.
