Prior to joining UWM, Mike served the previous three years as the Chief Finance Officer for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). He worked directly with the CEO and directors of DHHS on guiding the development, monitoring, and management of a four-billion-dollar budget. Mike and his team’s work were critical in ensuring funding was available for the projects, programs, and services DHHS provides in supporting the DHHS’ mission of Helping People Live Better Lives.
Under Mike’s leadership, DHHS managed the accounting and federal reporting of over 150 grants, including the Medicaid and Foster Care/Child Welfare grants. Other main focuses of Mike’s department were the coordination of audit compliance and communication, budget setting, and fiscal note development for proposed legislation.
Prior to the CFO role, Mike spent a year and a half as the Deputy Director of Finance and Program Integrity for the Division of Medicaid within DHHS. Within that role, Mike helped develop and manage the two-billion-dollar budget for the state’s Medicaid program. He also led Medicaid’s Program Integrity unit that implemented controls to reduce fraud, waste, and abuse of Medicaid funds.
Mike began his career with Union Pacific and spent 10 years in various roles within the marketing and sales department.
Mike earned his degree in Accounting from the University of Iowa. He resides in Gretna with his wife Toni, and their three children Brody (12), Cora (5), and Paxton (2).
