Meet Cass

She has overcome addiction, homelessness and domestic violence. With support from YOU, her family is stronger than ever.

Imagine being pregnant, and not having a place to call home.

Cass was referred to the Pottawattamie County Center for Healthy Families when she was residing in a local shelter. The Center, which is funded by United Way of Midlands and operated by Lutheran Family Services (LFS), promotes healthy family behaviors.

When Cass started classes there, she was determined to become the best possible parent for her unborn child.

“I treated the class as a requirement for a start in my new life. I gave birth to my son during the course of the class, and it was the only class that I missed.”

Since being referred to the Center, Cass has finished drug court and obtained her driver’s license. Now, two years later, both she and her son’s father are able to provide for their family.

“The Center for Healthy Families played an active role in helping put my family back together.”

“The entire team at LFS also offered support in ways that I never thought strangers could,” she said. “I don’t think I could have done it without them.”

Susan, a program coordinator at Pottawattamie County Center for Healthy Families, described Cass as an outgoing, kind and motivated individual who is always willing to help others.

“It’s a priviledge to be able to work with her and watch her grow and interact with her family.”

Parents all across our metro are experiencing challenges that can hold themselves and their children back from success. By supporting basic needs programs in our metro, you help families maintain safe and affordable housing, gain transportation so they can get to work and school, overcome addiction, deal with past trauma and violence, build their support systems and so much more.

Thank you for helping families become stronger, because strong families make our community strong.

Poverty is complex and challenging. We know that someone who needs food might also struggle with physical and mental health, job stability and more. That’s why we invest donor dollars in basic needs, education AND financial stability programs that form a circle of support for people in need.

Basic Needs

Cass is just one of many individuals who have benefited from local programs, funded by United Way donors, that offer basic needs supports. We invite you to learn more about the more than 60 basic needs programs your donation helps fund.
